Winterfair Gifts Miles Vorkosigan Adventures Lois McMaster Bujold Grover Gardner 9781433250194 Books

Before becoming a kindle owner, I discovered authors and books by wandering the stacks in bookstores and my nearest public library branch. I had been working my way alphabetically through the mystery section at my public library, assisted by Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine and the Mystery Guild, when I realized I needed to purchase an e-reader. There were no more walls in my home for additional bookcases to hold books plus we could not afford a larger home with more walls. Maybe it was all the money I spent on books. Unlike another reviewer, I would never find myself in an airport without a book to read. I travel with books, which makes my luggage a tad heavy on the scales. Another reason for an e-reader.

Back to this novella: this was one of my early Sci Fi and Fantasy genre discoveries after getting my Kindle. This is not a genre which fills many inches on my wooden and metal bookshelves. But it was not one I had completely neglected either (there are no Westerns on my bookshelves). I was thrilled when I read this novella from the Vor series by Bujold. It has everything I want from a good novel, novella, or short story. Good characters, good plot, some intelligent humor, and a bit of life philosophy. And it was from a prolific author. I decided based on this novella that this author was going on my "buy" list. I love the offbeat character Miles. A bold stroke to make him physically imperfect. I love the cantankerous Vorkosigan universe. It was obvious that I needed to explore the Sci Fi and Fantasy genre more, because by not doing so, I had missed out on this author for nearly three decades.

I am officially old and my retinas are genetically fragile and one is not working so hot. That I, who have only one good working eye (making me a Cyclops) and a couple of decades left at most (since THIS universe could decide MY time is up at any moment), recommend this author and this series as a must read, should be taken under serious consideration by anyone reading my review.

Download a sample. Try this author. IMHO, she is that good. Not-to-be-missed.

Thank you for reading my review.

Winterfair Gifts Miles Vorkosigan Adventures Lois McMaster Bujold Grover Gardner 9781433250194 Books Reviews

I have loved almost all of Bujold's books and stories. And re-read them for the stories, the characterization, and the humor. That said, this is not one of her best. It's a little lightweight. It lacks the depth of the rest of the Vorkosigan series (or the screwball romance of Shards of Honor). Every author has an "off" day, or work, and of course, there's the subjective factor as well. Some books speak more strongly to some readers than to others. I enjoyed reading it (I can enjoy reading an article about cooking kale if I have nothing better to read) but it won't be the one I read again when I need another Bujold fix.
This novella is fun, neat, diverting, funny, and moving, but not as gripping or substantial (obviously?) as Bujold's full-length Miles Vorkosigan novels. The most interesting thing about it is that it's completely narrated in third person from the point of view of Armsman Roic, a low-ranking Vorkosigan bodyguard/butler. this is also, I suppose the disappointing part of it, because I missed Miles' quirky ironic self-deprecating vision. Anyway, through Roic we witness Miles' wedding to Ektarine Vorsoisson, complete with intriguing wedding gifts, one of which turns out to be more than it at first seems and ends up signifying something about the newly wedded couple that bodes ill for any future enemies. Through Roic, we also learn more about Sergeant Taura, the bioengineered, fanged and clawed giantess with a designed-in short life span. In short, people who are already fans of Bujold's Vorkosigan saga would enjoy this, but people new to her series should probably start with Warrior's Apprentice, the first book about Miles.
The version I read seemed fine I noticed no typos, etc.
This audio book allows you to enjoy the double romance of an unusual wedding and an even more unusual courtship. Miles Vorkosigan is at last marrying Ekaterin Vorsoisson, and in attendance for the event is a very special guest the towering, fanged, gengineered super warrior Taura, who also happens to be one of Miles' prior lovers. This doesn't phase Ekaterin -- NOTHING phases Ekaterin -- because Miles had told her before they even began their own cautious, beleaguered courtship about his past peccadilloes and failed attempts at finding a woman brave enough to take on in marriage, not only "the mutie lord" Vorkosigan, but the planet Barrayar itself that he served, body, breath and soul. But on Barrayar Taura is not among the mercenaries who value her for her strength and skills, she is on a planet that hates and fears mutants and mutations of every sort, even deliberately engineered ones like her. Miles does his best to protect his friend from harassment, even assigning his tallest guard to protect Taura from social mishap.
Rolf isn't used to being shorter than the person he is guarding. He also isn't used to working in one of the most famous Great Houses of the Imperium. He feels like an out-of-place fool, but gradually Taura helps put him at ease, until he puts his foot in it with an unfortunate and unintended remark.
But when Taura has cause to suspect an act of terrible betrayal that pulls her heart and her sense of loyalty in opposite directions, only Rolf can find the solution that saves her honor, and saves the Vorkosigsans.
A glorious mix of romance, humor, style, and the virtue of Guardians, this is one of my favorite audio books of all times.
