This is not one of her bests, but it is a "comedy of secrets" as Shakespeare would say. Though it is loosely badged on the play Rosalind's, As You Like It, play by Shakespeare. The story drags at the beginning and the racing is interesting, however, the drama is not revealed until the ending of the book. The best part is the last three chapter's. There is not enough dealings with the p!of to really make it standout until you get to those three chapters. It would have been more exciting with open chatter between the two instead of just thoughts. Sir William could have been used better also. The mystery of Aunt Anne helped but not enough. This is a slow read but a thought provoking one.

Charming, romantic story that proves once again Theresa Romain owns a very unique historical voice and knows how to translate it to paper. That being said I was a bit dissatisfied with the story.
First off, I have to say the blurb was a bit misleading. There is a mystery to solve but the suspicions never came from the main characters. My other peeve was that I found the first few chapters slow-paced and it took me a while to get into the story; it wasn’t until mid-book that I found myself completely engage in it. Also, the mystery subplot kept slowing the pace and that prevented me from enjoying the story to the fullest.
So, while it was charming and romantic and the author never ceased to amaze me with her usual writing style it pains me to say this was not one of my favorite stories by her. ** I received a copy of this story via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review **
Newmarket England - 1818
Nathaniel Chandler travels all over England buying and selling horses for his father’s business. Baron Sir William Chandler, a widower, is confined to a wheelchair as the result of a palsy he developed. Nathaniel and his father are not on the best of terms with each other. Some years ago after the death of his mother, Sir William’s grief expressed itself as coldness to his son, making Nathaniel turn to drink and now he is still working to regain his father’s trust. But the man’s continued coldness to him hurts him deeply.
Nathaniel returns from his latest trip to find that several of their horses have the colic. At the same time, he meets his father’s new secretary, Rosalind Agate, who is also very good with horses. They both work together to help treat and calm the ailing horses.
When more horses come down with the colic, everyone suspects that someone is behind it trying to harm their prize horses.
As Nathaniel and Rosalind get to know one another better, an attraction begin. However, Rosalind is hiding some secrets.
I have always loved Theresa Romain’s books but I must say that the way facts were brought out piecemeal in the story made it a bit confusing and frustrating to follow. Had I known more of what was going on in the beginning of the book, I think it would have intrigued me more.

It's a meandering tale. I liked the hero and the heroine, but the story maundered and slogged at times.
This book was a delight. I loved Nathaniel and Rosalind—two people trying hard to do the right thing. Their problems were believable because of the kind of people they were. She is trying to fulfill what she sees as an obligation. He is trying to win his father's trust. Nothing was overdone or turned into unnecessary melodrama. The attraction and growing love between them is sweet and—I think tender is the right word.
And I love the way they pick up on short sentences. You know. What. I mean.
I wanted to like this book - the main characters were nice and seemed well-suited for each other, however, I spent the entire first half (maybe even a little more) bored out of my mind. Almost all the action and forward motion in the plot happens at the end, and even then it's not entirely satisfying, because it sort of feels like it's all too easy.
I loved this book--loved reading about the horses and the inn that Rosalind's family owned. I felt close to Rosalind right away because I also have scars from a fire even after all this time. I could also relate to her wanting to pay off the debt. I loved Nathaniel. I hope William finds his long, lost daughter. This book was emotional but funny and very well written. I love Rosalind's relationship with her parents and siblings.
This is Book #1 in Romance of the Turf Regency series. It is the story of Nathaniel Chandler and Rosalind Agate.
"How far will a man go to win a woman's secretive heart?"
Nathaniel Chandler is talented but problematic. His family seems to be afflicted by bad luck. So Nathaniel has learned to get by on using his charisma. He can charm his way through deals with anyone from a horse breeder to an English noble. His expertise is tested when his stable of horses become ill. It all looks suspicious, especially coming right before the Epsom Derby. Nathaniel starts to suspect maybe his father's newest secretary may be involved. Maybe she isn't as innocent as her impression is.
Rosalind is helping Nathaniel's family in their search for a winner at the Derby. He would be very shocked to know why. They both must keep their suspicions out of the way if they are going to keep their means of support. Derby Day draws close. He must use his charm and she must use her wit to be an effective investigative twosome.
Their desire for one another grows as they work closer together. Once they lose their hearts to each other, Rosalind's secrets and Nathaniel's charm will do nothing to defend them.
This story is a mystery that needs solved, joining two out of the ordinary associates. It is a great beginning to a new series. I really enjoyed the banter of Nathaniel and Rosalind. I love the authors style of writing, and was easily taken into the character's world.
