I loved this book! So refreshing to find a spunky heroine who’s gifted at something besides killing. THE STORY PEDDLER delivers loads of action and intrigue with its very colorful world, while Tanwen, the young story weaver, learns more about her art and the truth behind it. FANTASTIC! Looking forward to the sequel!
There are creative ideas. There are unique story lines. There are unusual characters. And then there is Lindsay Franklin’s book. The Story Peddler is a creative idea with a unique story line and unusual characters all wrapped up into a delightful fantasy. When her main character tells a story, lines of color flow from her hands, weave together and create something real that you can hold. It is such an amazing concept and her story reads as if Lindsay IS a story peddler. This book is the final outcome of many brilliant colors woven together by Lindsay into something real.
To be perfectly honest, I bought this book to support a fellow homeschool mother, but I was blown away when I started reading this book.

Tanwen has an amazing gift when she tells stories, ribbons of light flare from her fingers, illustrating her stories. At the conclusion, the story solidifies and becomes an artifact that she can sell. When treasonous threads start infiltrating her stories, she has to flee in order to avoid arrest by the king's men. She learns the truth about the king and her ability while hiding out with fellow storytellers.

I loved this book! I couldn't read it fast enough to find out what would happen to Tanwen. And I'm not sure I can wait until next summer for the next book although I will have to. ) There are a few rough spots and the story concludes rather quickly and fairly easily for the protagonists, but I will definitely read the rest of this series!
It’s a book like The Story Peddler that has me save 5 star reviews for only the best books I read. I enjoy many books, but ones like this don’t come around all the time.

Lindsay has crafted a fun, beautiful, touching read about a young girl who is trying to make a life selling stories. But she has the story weaving gift, so her tales make beautiful little glass tokens people will buy.

One day when a treasonous thread slips into the story, the king is alerted and her life is endangered. Will she be able to avoid being a pawn in the politics of the realm?

First of all, this is such a unique magic system. It is so interesting to see the different ways weaving is used in the book.

The characters make the book for me. From the young and hopeful Tanwen who weaves stories to the Princess Braith and her attempts at reining in the king’s excesses, they are so fleshed out. They come alive on the pages.

The plot is also twisty and full of surprises. There’s fun and levity, along with heart-wrenching scenes that took a lot of bravery to write.

Finally, the hopeful and beautiful message brought everything together. I am not an emotional guy but I teared up at the end.

If you love YA, fantasy, or a well-spun tale, then make sure you read The Story Peddler. It is one of the best books I’ve read in years and I can’t wait for book 2.
Oh. My. Goodness.
I finished reading this book for the first time 15 minutes ago, and I already want to go back and start reading it again.
It's a wonderful fantasy adventure for any fantasy reader in its own right - a well-developed story world with knights and magic and an evil king and a farm girl who dreams of bigger things - and is written in a unique, honest, straightforward voice that reminded me somewhat of Jonathan Rogers.
But if you're a creative in any way, artist, writer, songwriter, whatever, this book will refresh your spirit and feed your soul. "Art has a way of revealing truth," as is said many times throughout the story, and in this book we get to see that happening in a big-picture kind of way that we often can't step back far enough to see here in the real world.
This story is a refreshing breath of air for every creator, and an encouraging reminder to follow your creative gifts where they lead - to release the art inside of you as it was meant to be, to not hold it back or change it to fit into a political agenda - a message that's sorely needed in the current climate.
I hope the sequel comes out soon, because there was one particular story thread (no pun intended) that really left me anxious and uneasy, and I want to see how it turns out.
The closest thing to a complaint I have about it would be that the main character's rustic vernacular sometimes felt like it got a little cluttered. One example would be, when the character receives some shocking news, she says "But how in the name of mountainbeast milk did (this particular event occur)?" and to me that's such a lengthy interjection that it threw the rhythm and flow off a bit. That happened two or three times throughout the book. So, nothing huge or disastrous, but it did tend to happen when we were right in the middle of tense situations when I just wanted to move quickly and figure out what was going on without tripping over a big, awkward phrase like that. That's seriously the only thing that comes close to a complaint or criticism from me.
I love this book. This will be a book I read over and over again for years to come. I will read this book to my children, especially if any of them turn out to be creatives. Go read this book. Seriously.
