The Goddaughter A Gina Gallo Mystery Melodie Campbell Books
I received the third book, the Artful Goddaughter, free as part of the LibraryThing Early Reviewer program. When I heard that, I bought the previous two so I could read the whole story. While each does a nice job of being a stand along story, having read the previous two made the third that much better. All were funny, faced-paced, easy stories that would make a great beach read. Campbell is has an excellent eye for the quirks of families and she created some memorable ones. Stories like these three could easily disolve into a mess of sterotypes, but Campbell avoids that with a deft hand. I enjoyed these works immensely. I look forward to reading the next ones!

The Goddaughter A Gina Gallo Mystery Melodie Campbell Books Reviews
A caper worthy of Donald Westlake, but starring a woman much more savvy than Dortmunder. What more need be said?
Dangerously funny! Be warned, there are sneaky spit-laugh moments throughout. Honestly, I have not laughed out loud, loudly, in the middle of the night so often since I was in third grade and entranced by Freddy the Pig.
The porkers here are Gina’s male relatives and their “business” acquaintances, as befits a woman whose extended family is THE local crime family in their part of Canada. After a courier from another “famly” gets killed on their turf, they’re desperate to avoid a gang war and Gina’s the least likely to be searched at the border so….
Oh, did I mention the jewels? Fabulous! And the shoes? To die for, darlings! And the MAN. The kind we’d all like to have at our side (or back, or front) when bullets are flying and bodies are bouncing. There’s a bit of mattress-bouncing too, but the heated action takes place off-page, with only some tasty flirtation around it.
Also, it’s short, a Rapid Read that you can get through in half an hour over your coffee. With due respect for potential choking due to sudden spurts of laughter.
This is an insanely zany caper that unrolls speedily into your eyes and brain with great visual images crafted from fewer words than I would have ever imagined possible. A comic tour-de-force and not to be missed! A heartfelt five stars from me.
This very short novel (actually a novella) is about Gina Gallo, a certified gemologist. She is also related to the local mob in the Hamilton, Ontario area, but she insists that she is out of "the family business." Well, not exactly.
A botched diamond delivery leads to Gina being "convinced" to smuggle them across the border, to Buffalo, in the heels of a pair of fancy shoes. The shoes get stolen, forcing Gina, and local sports writer Pete Malone, to follow the thief, a bleached blond prostitute, to a hotel in Phoenix. The shoes are retrieved, and the pair head back to Hamilton.
Before the delivery can be made, there is the small matter of getting a recently murdered mob associate out of the Buffalo morgue before the autopsy. It involves the use of an ice cream truck to get the body across the border.
Do Gina and Pete get the diamonds to the right people in Buffalo? Since Pete now knows too much about internal "family business," his choices are to marry Gina, or get whacked.
This is a very short book that can be read in an hour or so. It's got some humor to it (the mobsters are not exactly at the level of the film "Goodfellas") and it will keep the reader entertained.
Raymond Chandler channelled noir with a funny female edge, presenting a smart mafia goddaughter who is a moll of mirth. Great dialogue and comic action. Lots `o laughs. A great read.
"The Goddaughter" by Melodie Campbell is a fast-paced, hilarious journey into the mob world. Gina Gallo was born into "the family" and, although she tries her best to distance herself from it, it looks like she's stuck for life. When she's reluctantly recruited to carry some hot gems across the US/Canadian border, she has quite an adventure and finds love in the process. A wonderful read! I highly recommend it.
I picked up this little book, "The Goddaughter," and thought, "Yeah, right. Another chick book."
Boy, was I wrong, The first page pulled me right in and I couldn't put it down. A fascinating story told with humor, no cumbersome phrases or tired cliches. I guarantee you will be kept on the edge of the couch by this tale. Nothing predictable here except a laugh that keeps growing. I didn't want it to end. Melanie - where's the sequel?
I read/write westerns. Melodie Campbell doesn't do westerns. So, she's not my favorite author. But she's among the top two.

The Goddaughter by Melodie Campbell is a delightful and humorous story about Gina, a goddaughter to the mob. Gina is doing her best to distance herself from her life's connections, but it's just not working.
When Gina's cousin is unfortunately taken out of the picture, Gina has no choice but to step in and move some stolen gems. The gems are then stolen from her, and she's got to retrieve them with the help of Pete, a non-mob romantic interest. I won't say the fun begins there, because it starts on the first page and just keeps building.
The only complaint I had about this book is that I wish it was longer. I didn't want to see it end. I highly recommend The Goddaughter to everyone looking for a story to lighten their day. Gina will make you laugh out loud.
